Getting caught up, and getting on board…

March 30, 2009

Well, here it is, the end of March. I haven’t been good about posting WIP because I haven’t been feeling the urge to paint. I think the painting bug is back. The key is variety for me. The commission Cygnar Trenchers and ‘jacks have been my bane this last month, I did manage to finish the Sharpshooter and may even have the rest of the unit done by tomorrow, which would probably make the Kenny very happy. I need to get more ‘jacks done for him, and I am glad he is a patient client.

I did manage to get something started and to the inking stage pretty quick, like yesterday. I was able to pick up a 3rd Nomad for fairly cheap ($10), and decided the theme for them will be ‘old cars’, namely the ’55- ’57 Chevrolet Nomads. I started ’57 yesterday, here is where he sits currently:

… and the Trenchers:

Just to change things up and make the Nomad look a little dirty, I used the Citadel Devlan Mud wash, and was pretty happy with it overall. Badab Black may have been a better choice, but I am not going back and doing it again.

The other part of this is about going Merc for Summer Rampage. I am all for it. Of course, I think I have just about everything Merc one can have, and I am especially full of Pirates and Privateers, though I have a fondness for running 4 Star, and sometimes even Searforge contracts (since I do have Brun & Lug).

The last Summer Rampage was a lot of fun, and I am glad that Privateer reduced the number of tours in the Call to Arms League so we as players could recover and not suffer from burnout. Four 5 week tours and a Summer Rampage plus the rest of the organized play and events makes it a lot easier to hit the proverbial gaming wall. I am glad they made it 3 tours this year, plus Summer Rampage, and then this coming month is the Mark II BETA, so we will have our hands full. The beauty of Summer Rampage and playing mercs will be that I will have a good amount of time to paint my Mercenary forces, as long as I can keep up on the Band of Bodgers II Circle army I am painting.

But wait, there’s more!

Pick a contract, play a game…

March 30, 2009

That’s right, I’m doing it for money now. It was only a matter of time.

I decided Saturday night that I wanted to play Mercs for Summer Rampage this year. I didn’t do SR last year and can’t remember what I used two years ago. It was Cygnar or Protectorate.

That all changes, starting now.

I’ve proudly worn the Cygnus on my profile on the PP boards. This afternoon, after some thought, I changed it to Mercs. The Cygnus will return, once I’ve learned how to win with Mercs. Mike has pwned me for three months now, including a 750-point doubleheader on Friday. I need to do something to change the way I think and the way I play. I’ve become predictable and don’t try different models or combinations.

Time for a fundamental shift in the way I approach Warmachine.

I have a ton of models for Highborn Covenant and plenty for Four Star Syndicate. I can even field a decent Magnus Agenda. I’m lacking Searforge models, but have access to Highshields and Forgeguard. I can use all things Steelheads as well, though I will contract out the assembly of the Halberdiers when I get them. I hate those fuckers with a burning passion from the depths of Ur Caen. Oh sure, I can paint the shit out of em, but since these will be my models, they’ll become astronauts if I assemble them. I guarantee it.

I’ll start out with Highborn, since it’s all stuff I can use with Cygnar. I love Ashlynn, Fiona and Bart. I’ve got a fun Gorten list too (thank you iBodger!). Naturally, I have enough jacks to get things done. I just need to get models assembled. Here’s hoping it’s slow at work this week.

Summer Rampage is the main reason for the switch — the first Mk II book will be based on which faction wins. So over in the Merc forums, there’s already an effort to get organized for this summer. Right now, we’ve got 5 or 6 at the LGS who are on board with this. Between now and July or August, our numbers should grow.

Pick a contract and play a game. And while you’re at it, throw in your support for a Steelhead Warcaster!

Citadel washes: Asurmen Blue & Badab Black

March 27, 2009

At long last, a painting-related update!

Since Saeryn was on the March Challenge list and I was using two more Citadel washes on her, I figured it was as good a time as any for anther step-by-step. The bad thing is, after building a new light box, I realize how shitty the pics are. So my apologies.

The amazing thing about these washes is that I really put them on thick — especially the black over the metallics and I still like the way they turned out. Using the blue over Frost Bite makes it so quick and easy to paint the studio scheme for Legion. It’s not 100% the same way Privateer does it (theirs has less blue), but it works for my client, and much like painting white, it eliminates a layer or two.

Anyway, hope this was helpful. I’ll eventually work through the whole line. An these step-by-steps will have a new home — not killing this blog, but have another one in the works. 😉

This makes it all better

Real life intrudes…

March 24, 2009

So I just found out I’m moving the beginning of May. My landlord let me know a few hours ago that my housemate (her son) wants to move his fiance and her kid in and I’ve got until May 15. And since I’ll be in Seattle on May 13, I need to be out that first week in May. Joy.

Needless to say, painting challenges, blogs, gaming and the like are not at the forefront, which pisses me off almost as much as the prospect of having to relocate me, my animals and all my stuff.

April was going to be a good painting month for me and now I get to sort through boxes and figure out where the hell I’m going to live and if I’m going to need to take on a new job or three to afford it. I’m excited about the blogs and projects I was set to launch in April/May. Now, I don’t have a timeline. I’ve got a more pressing deadline.

I’d like to hope I’ve stored up enough good karma that something will come through, but I’m too much of a realist to believe that. I’m going to ask around. I know in the end, things will work themselves out. And I do believe things happen for a reason.

It’s just that the reason for this is unclear, and uncertainty bothers me.

Painting finally

March 24, 2009

I finally got to do some work on my March vow and some work on the Breast Cancer Brawl army. I have the Overseer, Orin, Stryker, and 5 sword knights done. I have 5 more almost finished, I need to do highlights on the cryx bane color and all of the pink with a small finishing of the bases.

I also want t o second the wonderful Citadel washes. I have not refined my use of these washes since I have only worked on 7 minis and 6 of them had to look like the paint jobs I have done with other washes and inks. However the washes go on easily with less fuss and do indeed dry quickly. I will try highlighting after the was his applied when I get to work on epic Kruegar.
